A Good Fit For Me
I am a registered nurse. Unfortunately, I cannot work as a nurse any longer, because I have become disabled. I attended the University of Wyoming and received a bachelor’s degree in nursing along with a minor in psychology. I loved working as a nurse, but my back had other ideas. Over a period of a few years, I slipped on the hard Wyoming winter ice twisting my back; and then lifting patients at work, I caused my back to bulge several disks. Finally, one disk herniated causing nerve damage down my left leg and foot. I recently had my fourth surgery on that same disk, and bone spurs removed on an upper vertebra. I have been on disability for the past 8 years. My daughter is taking online courses, and encouraged me to do the same. I have looked into several different courses, but feel that medical transcription would be the ideal area for me. I already know much medical terminology, anatomy, and other medically related areas. I know I will never be able to work as a nurse or in an office again, so I need to be able to work from home. I am on my computer much of the day anyway, but I can get up when I need to, rest when I need to, and leave it and come back throughout the day. Working in an office will not give me that flexibility. Some days I can work on it longer than other days. I do not drive now either, so getting to a job would be a challenge as well. Spelling is one of my best subjects, and I passed my medical terminology class with a 99%. It is an area that I enjoy, so I feel medical transcription jobs would be a good fit for me in that respect. I have seen many patients’ medical records, as well as my own, that have had transcription errors and that has always irritated me. I would strive to make sure the medical records I would transcribe will be free of errors. Being on disability, I do not have much money. I really don’t want to take a course that will put me into more debt, and the prospect of a scholarship would be a huge help to me. Even though I do have training in nursing, and have worked as a nurse, my area of experience was limited. I like the idea that your school offers a wide variety of training in all areas of the medical profession. This would give me the opportunity to have a better chance to find work, and even choose which area I would like to work in. I get social security disability and Medicare, as well as food stamps. At times, I even get Medicaid to help with extra expenses. The problem is, all of this is only enough to get by. I want to do more than just get by. I would like to be able to buy something nice or even go somewhere. I will never be able to by just getting by. I want to work again, but cannot work in an office, or hospital, or anywhere else that requires being there a certain number of hours a day. At first I want to start out slow, get back into the working habits, and then take on more assignments as I am able. Down the road further I would possibly like to run a business, and hire other transcriptionists to work for me and with me.
