A Meaningful Way to Contribute

I would like to be considered for the scholarship primarily because I’d like to become a medical transcriptionist or an MT. After nine years of working in-house registry in a pediatric hospital, I recently gave up my nursing position to care for my sister who became disabled and afflicted with a physically challenging disorder. Our father died September 12, 2004 and then our mother died December 29, 2005 (only 15 months later). Since our brother lives out of state, I felt it necessary to help my sister in this manner because I’m all she has left!! I would love to stay in touch with the fascinating world of medical and nursing jargon. I feel that medical transcription at home would keep me connected and yet give me the opportunity to see about my sister. Staying home and performing transcription duties would allow me time to have the flexibility needed and have an extreme advantage of typing informational and important documents according to an already established criterion. Transcribing of the patient’s care and medical record into typewritten form, putting it into an easy readable format and converting these documents may eliminate misinterpretation by other healthcare providers as well as the insurance companies that may have to interpret such information. To work in a transcribing industry means helping physicians to help patients have their reports completed in a timely manner which helps them to serve the patients more effectively and perhaps help patients to get better coverage from their insurance companies. In my opinion, this is a rewarding and self-motivating career that keeps one in touch with the real world of assorted situations that many people deal with or an array of conditions some people are faced with everyday. Since I have experience in the nursing field, I can already contribute my knowledge of medical terminology. I am educated with an associate’s degree in nursing; I have excellent spelling-grammar and communications skills. I have good computer-faxing-scanning and typing skills. I follow directions well and am very organized and detail-oriented, especially when needed. Doctors and nurses, as well as other healthcare professionals, have to maintain strict compliance with confidentiality for our patient population. The medical profession is constantly changing as far as new medications, procedures, equipment and devices and we are faced with new challenges very often. This keeps you connected with our changing world and how to help people in a more efficient manner. I believe that more retired healthcare professionals will become MT’s in the future because they are already familiar with the doctor’s wording, medical terminology, familiar with care plans, do a variety of patient charting, follow directions, policy and procedures, care for patients in a timely manner, already know what some of the lab value ranges should be, monitor patient’s vitals, document, and recognize signs and symptoms of diseases and/or conditions. They already practice confidentiality and know the patient population. I feel that becoming an MT would be a beautiful and meaningful way to contribute or give back to an important and rewarding career field.
