A New Career Venue

My name is Mary Catherine Berg and I am a former science teacher and biochemical lab technician. Four years ago I left the teaching profession to care for my aging mother-in-law who was recently placed in a nursing home due to the fact that her needs could no longer be provided for at home. During that time, I also took in several foster children who are now placed with relatives or with their parents. I live in a remote area of Montana and am at the point in my life that I am looking for a new career venue that will allow me to work from my home while providing a necessary service. It is often difficult in this part of the country to travel long distances due to our severe weather patterns. My home is fifty miles from the nearest town, Billings Montana, which is one of the fastest growing medical corridors in our part of the country. Billings is the regional hub for several services including cancer research, heart specialties, diabetes services and research, along with an extensive orthopedic surgical and rehabilitation community. The medical services provided in the Billings area have recently expanded with a new cancer research center, creating a greater demand for medical transcriptionists both as regular employees and private contractors. I have researched a variety of online medical transcriptionist training programs and find your program to be one of the most comprehensive. By offering a variety of training resources, a live mentoring element, and support in finding employment, you provide the kind of resources necessary in today’s market to enter into a new field that I both respect and appreciate. I especially appreciate the fact that I can receive my training online from the comfort of my own home. In the next five to ten years, I would like to establish myself in the medical transcription field as a full home-based business. This includes not only receiving an MT education and working in the field, but supervising and mentoring other medical transcriptionists living in remote areas such as myself. My husband and I live on the Crow Indian Reservation where the unemployment rate is close to 90% and the level of education provided is less than adequate. There are very few resources and essentially no local opportunities for employment here. We have built a 10,000 square foot home, mainly from recycled materials, and would like to use it in a way that would benefit our community. We have several rooms available that can be used to set up with computers to train community members and allow them to work in this field. There are educational funds provided to enroll members by the tribe that would assist in the purchasing of your program. This would not only provide a much needed service, but give them the opportunity to further their education and support their families in a realistic way. I appreciate your consideration of my application for this scholarship and am looking forward to your response.
