My name is Tammy Quilliam, I am a 48 year old single mother of one 17 year old daughter. I am interested in becoming an M.T. for several reasons. My daughter has a rare medical condition called P.O.T.S. (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome). She has to go to several doctor’s appointments and has physical therapy twice a week. Her long term prognosis is unsure. We traveled from Texas to Minnesota in January 2009 to see the physicians at the Mayo Clinic to confirm her diagnosis.
I need to be able to have a job where I can work at any time from 2 am to 12 pm. I need the flexibility to be able to work either from my home, a hospital room or even if we are traveling. Where ever I may be with my daughter. I have always worked in the health care field. I previously worked at the Lubbock Medical Health and Mental Retardation center as a benefits coordinator and also at a home health agency as a Program coordinator.
I was recently laid off from my job due to economic reasons within the company. I worked for this company for a total of 5 years. I feel my biggest asset is that I work very well under pressure and with deadlines. I also know how to manage my time and tasks extremely well. I am a very detail oriented person. I have never required any supervision beyond minimal with any of my previous positions. I learn very quickly and enjoy learning new and interesting information. I would like to be able to stay in some facet of the medical field. I already have some experience in medical terminology and medical diagnosis. I am experienced in working on a computer and enjoy if very much. My typing skills are excellent.
I looked at several online medical transcriptionist schools and what caught my eye about Future M.T. was the BBB logo. Future M.T. is obviously thought of highly and is secure in its business practice. With Future M.T. I would be able to work at my own pace. I tend to learn quickly and like the idea of being able to take the courses and finish the training as soon as possible. I see my future as an M.T. as a long term satisfactory way of supporting myself and my daughter. Being an M.T. is my way of staying informed and active in the medical field which is a field which I have found is my niche and something I have found enjoyment. I would like to complete the course, find a position and begin working in the field as soon as possible.
I believe that becoming an M.T. could be the best direction I could take in my life. It would afford me the luxury of working when I am able and still be able to take care of my daughter. I would be able to take her to all of her doctor’s appointments and therapy visits. Plus it would give me the feeling
of still being in the medical field and a sense of accomplishment. Please
consider this essay for your Scholarship program.
