Helping The Family Budget

My name is Corie Heller. I am a 40-year old married mother of 4. My children range in age from 2 to 15. I graduated from United States International University (now known as Alliant International University) with a bachelor degree. At the point that I graduated, I was engaged and had a small child. I moved on to study law at Thomas Jefferson School of Law. However, one night, no different than any other since I had begun law school, I looked at my little boy lying next to me in my books, fast asleep. I started to think about the time we used to spend together and how that had changed. I started to wonder if we would wake up one day and not really know each other; if we would no longer be close. I approached some of my female professors and asked if the lengthy hours I had to dedicate now would lighten up after school. Each of them told me that they probably would not for at least 5 years, if not longer. I didn’t have it in me to sacrifice that much time with my son. My fiancee, now husband, would understand but there was no way that a little boy could comprehend the lack of his mother’s presence. Given that, I left school behind, as well as my dreams. To this day, I have never regretted that decision. I not only have a very tight relationship with my 15-year old but my other 3 children as well. At the time in which I decided to leave law school, I was working part-time at a pharmacy benefit company called MedImpact. Since I had been a Hospital Corpsman in the US Navy, I decided to stick with MedImpact and grow within the company. I was comfortable with medical terminology and felt this was a good decision for me. I did grow in the company. I had moved into management. I regularly met with potential and new clients to review their benefits and determine how to build said benefits into our system. I enjoyed my job. I enjoyed it until I returned from having my second child and found that I was going to be required to travel far more than I had in the past. After discussing the situation with my husband, together we decided it was in the best interest of our children for me to leave my job and become a stay-at-home mother. After my departure, we went on to have 2 more children. After being removed from the work force for 5 years, I found myself desiring a return to work. However, I am very busy with school, sports, dance, etc. Growing healthy, happy, well-rounded children takes time and dedication. Within the following year, my husband was forced to take his 2nd drastic pay cut. Given the times, I know it is necessary for me to start working again. The type of job I need would have to permit me to adjust my hours every 4 months as my husband is a police officer. His shift changes every 4 months. I found this is not realistic. The alternative is that I be permitted to work my own hours, preferably from home. Looking into that, I found that a medical transcriptionist job would provide the ability to do just that. I also feel that, given my background, it is a job I could learn quickly. However, it appears that this course is required. Being a family of 6 living on a single income, we cannot afford for me to take any classes at this time. I believe an online transcription job would be perfect for me! It would allow me to continue to attend to all of the needs of my children and husband, while permitting me to bring in extra money to help the family budget. The income may even eventually allow us to let me return to college for the required degree to work as a criminalist with the San Diego Police Department. Such a profession is my goal once all of my children are a little older. Thank you for your time and consideration.
