Interested in MT training
I was trained as a legal secretary many years ago and have worked for my husband who is an attorney since then on an at-home basis. I became passionate about health care when my father and two grandmothers became very ill and subsequently died. I also gave birth in 1997 to a son with cerebral palsy who needs some medical management as he is confined to a wheelchair. I became immersed in drugs, diseases, treatments, prevention, etc. and I realized it would be possible to transfer my secretarial skills to subject matter that I love–medical transcription! As the years progressed, I began to develop a voracious appetite for knowledge of the medical field. I love words and I am lucky to have a photographic memory where I only have to see a word once or twice and can picture how it should be spelled. I have always had excellent grammar skills and I have a penchant for doing things the “right” way–especially in transcription (think AAMT Book of Style).
I became proficient at proofreading (I proofread everything I see; I can’t help it!) I then got a job working for our local mental health clinic where I transcribed dictation for three psychiatrists for almost five years. It was necessary for me to keep myself updated on drugs, diseases, laboratory results, etc. I also became the “go-to” person when my other coworkers and transcriptionists couldn’t spell a word, couldn’t understand what the doctor was saying, or weren’t familiar with a particular drug or disease. I became a fan of Epocrates online, WebMD, and Medline and was able to find anything I needed within minutes. Although I loved this job, I had to resign due to the needs of my disabled son. This is why I am so interested in working at home–flexible hours and being able to work around his needs.
I am interested in the medical transcriptionist training with Future MT because of its curriculum, ease of use, and payment options. I believe that I don’t need to spend thousands of dollars to get a quality education. I need to pay attention to cost because as I mentioned above, I am no longer working and have less disposable income. I have used the HPI materials and am impressed with the fact that the founder of the AAMT (now AHDI) wrote the Health Professions Institute materials and that Future MT uses these materials. My ultimate goal is to run my own business down the road. I would like to become certified in this business (CMT) and continue my education in this area as far as I can go. I would even like to teach other prospective MT’s the right way to transcribe, how to use their reference materials, and to always work at achieving 100% accuracy in their transcription. I have a very strong work ethic and rarely missed work (I went two years without taking a sick day) because I loved what I was doing. I also understand that one needs to have compassion about seeing a person’s most private documents and fully understand that it is an absolute must that patients’ privacy be protected. It is a violation of the law to do anything else! Thank you for the opportunity to share my story with you. I look forward to hearing from Future MT.
