Lost Career
After 20 years as a dental assistant I developed “Natural Rubber Latex Allergy” which is potentially fatal. I got a job after 9 years that did not have some form of rubber and was laid off after 14 months due to lack of work. I can’t find another job without rubber and have run out of unemployment benefits. As it is difficult for me to find work without rubber, I feel typing jobs from home would be best for me. I feel I would be GREAT at medical transcription and billing/coding. I love working on computers. I also feel my dental background would help with any of these fields. The state of Wyoming does not recognize NRLA, and though I have applied for disability, they have denied me several times. I have been staying with some friends for a couple of weeks as my boyfriend of 4 years asked me to move out. I need to find a place to live and this is hard to do without an income. I left an abusive home at the age of 15 and never graduated high school. I was lucky enough to have a friend who was a dental assistant and she got me a job with her boss when I was 17. I passed the California Registered Dental Assistant licensing exam at 82% (76% was the pass limit) after only 18 months of on-the-job training, and I was told by every boss I’ve had that I was the best DA they ever worked with. I am now suffering from depression over my loss of career and income, as well as the rest of my life which kind of stinks! I also have asthma which my MD says was caused by the latex allergy, as well as a hyperthyroid, which I cannot afford to ultrasound for cancer even IF there was a latex free facility for me to go to (which there isn’t!). All I want is to be able to support myself. I truly feel that at this point in my life, there is no point to my life or to continuing it. Having the ability to take care of myself would help a lot in easing my depression and help to make me feel like a contributing member of society. I used to be VERY proud of myself as a dental assistant. Pride is not anything I have now. I helped many people get over their fear of going to the dentist and that made me very happy. Happiness is not anything I possess at this point either! I hope to be able to get help from Vocational Rehab, but will not know for a while. I have been told that if I qualify, Voc Rehab will supply me with a computer. The one I own now has a virus and I cannot afford to fix it. I also have nowhere to put one because I am staying in a very small room and my friends have no internet and no landline to get a connection. Thank you for your consideration…
