Medical Transcription Courses
I worked for three years doing legal transcription, and three years doing general and academic transcription. I have enjoyed transcription work a great deal. When I was laid off from my job a few months ago, I decided that I would try to get work as a legal transcriptionist, working from home. I’ve found it difficult to do because apparently there is a great deal of competition for those positions. Some companies are not even accepting applications or resumes. I believe that there are more opportunities in medical transcription. There are certainly more companies offering medical transcription services on the Internet. When I worked for a lawyer, he defended clients in automobile accident cases and in conjunction with that, I typed a great many medical records summaries. I enjoyed the hunt for the correct spelling of medical terms that I had never heard before and was usually very successful at guessing the spelling and pronunciation of the words. It was all very interesting to me. One reason that I want to do medical transcription is the ability to set my own hours and to take on as much work as I choose. To be able to take the dog for a 15-minute walk at two in the afternoon and then return to work refreshed is a distinct advantage. Of course the cost of gas, auto upkeep, and parking enter into the equation. There is a significant savings from avoiding those costs. I am interested in the MT course because it sounds like a program that can be completed more quickly than many others that I have read about on the Internet. It is also considerably less expensive. And the possibility of winning a full or partial scholarship is enticing. I would be worried that some companies might not accept graduates from the MT course, but the testimonials indicate that this is not a concern. And the assistance with job placement and the circulating of resumes for up to a year seems very helpful also. My educational and career goals at this point, quite frankly, are somewhat limited. I am at an age where most of my friends are retired or semi-retired. I choose to remain employed for perhaps another ten years, so the fact that the MT course can be completed quickly is very appealing. On the other hand, the possibility of forming my own medical transcription company and hiring others to work with me as independent contractors has crossed my mind. I am focused and organized, and I believe I have the skills necessary to manage a small company. In the process of applying to transcription companies, I have learned quite a bit about what is necessary to do so. Obviously the Internet opens up a whole world of opportunities. I also believe that I could establish accounts with clients in my local area. And finally, but most importantly, there is the opportunity to spend more time with my family. I have twin sons who are in college. They will be done in a year or two and will likely be starting families of their own. I want time to get to know their spouses and to be available to spoil any potential grandchildren. I believe that a career in medical transcription would afford me that time.
