My Desire To Be An MT
My name is Rachelle and I want to tell you how I became interested in work from home medical transcription jobs. I went to school for Medical Billing and Coding and earned my CCA through AHIMA which landed me a position in an Advocate hospital as an analyst and phone clerk for the transcriptionists. Part of my job is listening to the dictations for correct patients, dates of services, doctors, etc to assign the jobs to be transcribed and I have fallen in love with it. Every day that I receive the backlog emails on dictations, I wish I could jump in there and help. I like the flexibility of being able to work from home or on site. You see, I have a terminally ill child and I am also going through a divorce, but I have been blessed to have found a career that I truly love. I can earn a living that will support me and my child, that puts me front and center in the medical field without many years of schooling yet earns me just as much knowledge as a doctor, and allows me the freedom to work from home or on site or both. That way when the time comes that my child needs a full-time caretaker, I will be able to stay home and take care of her while still working and earning a living for us. I have been researching schools and I like what I see with Future MT. It’s affordable, there is over 300 hours of practice transcription, you receive a foot pedal and on-line support, and the program covers a vast amount of medical terminology. It is very important to know medical terminology when listening to the doctors dictate because it’s important to know what they are talking about and how to spell it out, especially if you are working on the medical side. You never know what kind of illness or surgery is in a patient’s H&P and you need to be prepared with an advanced knowledge of systems, pharmacology, and procedures. To me, learning to transcribe is like learning a second language—doctors have their own medical language that they speak and write. My goals are to get certified as a medical transcriptionist within the next 4-6 months in which time I can sit for the certification exam. Once I pass the exam, I could have a possible position at my current place of employment in the transcription department, or secure a part-time medical transcriptionist position working from my home for a service to gain experience. I would like to eventually work full-time for a hospital as a transcriber, and continue my education over the next three years earning my associate’s degree in Health Information to obtain my RHIT credential. That way I could work with both my CMT and RHIT credentials together. I hope I have answered all your questions and that you have a greater understanding of my desire to be a MT. Because I am caring for my child on my own, finances are tight for us, yet I still need to continue working on my education to be able to increase my income potential. Winning this scholarship for partial or full tuition would greatly improve the lives of two people in this world. Thank you for giving me this chance to tell my story and the chance to improve my situation and my child’s. Sincerely, Rachelle
