My dream career would be to be an MT

I am 43 years old, and am happy to say, that for the first time in my life, I’m proud of myself. I was an Executive Administrative Assistant for a mega-corporation. I quit my job of almost 20 years because my spouse got a job transfer; unfortunately, it was more difficult to find work than I had expected.

However, I was not upset, I realized that this was the opportunity that I always wanted, to go back to school. But what did I want to study? I saw people with business degrees being laid off left-and-right. A friend of mine suggested becoming an x-ray technician, but I enjoy working with your computers, so I began doing some research of career opportunities in the medical field.

I found a whole world that took place outside of an operating room or nursing and I was thrilled, because I truly believed I found my educational and career calling. I enrolled in Medical Billing and Coding and during my MIBC education, a teacher spoke of “Medical Transcription”. I didn’t know such a career existed, one of the reasons I was an administrative assistant for so many years was because I love to type and I had done Dictaphone transcription as an admin — to think, that I could make a career out of typing and in the medical field! I asked my teachers on how to become a medical transcriptionist and does this school offer an MT program? The school did not offer a program, so I started to do research.

During my school year, I separated from my spouse; I had to find work and fast! I was able to find a part-time evening job and decided to not quit school during the day. I won’t lie, there were days that I didn’t want to continue, I wanted to stay home and do nothing. I continued and am now finished and am graduating! And now that I am aware of the MT world, I going to pursue an MT career, it’s where I belong and I can use my MIBC education (i.e. Medical Terminology, Anatomy, etc) to move me forward in an MT education and career.

What drew me to your course is that first of all, it’s online and self-paced, you offer Live Mentoring – a lot of online courses have a student submit a question via e-mail and receive a response via e-mail or they tell you “to simply follow instructions and you’ll be fine”, job placement, AAMT accredited, money back guarantee — so many reasons. I still work evenings and am still on my own. Now that I graduated, I am looking for full-time work, I have applied for MT jobs, but without an MT education it has not been successful, so now that I’m done with the MIBC program, my new goal is to pursue an MT education and hopefully, an MT career.

I would be grateful and would love to be given a chance with your scholarship to pursue my dream career as a Medical Transcriber. It would not make a difference to me if I apply my MT education in a home-career or work in a hospital/medical environment, and as much as I would love to receive a scholarship, even if I don’t, it still would not deter me from pursing an MT education. As I said in the beginning, it is with no ego, but with pride that I say that I am very proud of myself. I could have used so many reasons to stop, but I found those very reasons, as reasons to continue. Thank you for the opportunity to submit my essay and my story.
