Why I’m Changing My Life
My name is Tia Marie Mattes. I am turning 30 next month (November) and just found out I am pregnant with my second child. My husband and I are thrilled with the addition to our family and my 3 year old son can not help but tell everyone how excited he is to be a big brother. Although we are all truly excited, this news has made us stop and evaluate where we are with our lives. I have been working in the intelligence field for the past 10 years and recently realized that the love and enjoyment I once felt for that line of work has dried up. My husband and I have always agreed that it would be great for me to be able to work from home: get the benefits of a stay at home mom (stable home life, home cooked dinners, no daycare/baby sitter worries/expenses, clean house, etc.) and continue to have a secondary income. The problem is finding an occupation that will be equally challenging and rewarding. Then a friend recommended medical transcription. His father is a doctor and his practice has been significantly helped by some great medical transcriptionists. The more I looked into it, the more promising it sounded. The main advantages of working in the medical transcription field for me include the obvious: make my own hours, work from home, care for my family while still helping household finances. I am a strong believer in “reap what you sow”. Therefore I am quite confident that working a self paced, challenging field like medical transcription will yield huge rewards. The chance to work from home means that I no longer have to worry about what my children pick up (emotionally and physically) at daycare or at the sitters house. I also think it is important for a family to be able to sit down together to a healthy, home cooked meal every night and to be able to spend their weekends doing fun activities together (not cleaning the house). It also means that although my family will reap the rewards of me working from home, my husband will not bear all the financial responsibility himself. Beginning my online medical transcriptionist training with Future MT opens a new door to an exciting career. It also promises stability and endless growth potential. The U.S Labor Statistics project a 14% growth in the next 7 years, which is higher than the average job growth (http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos271.htm). With growth like that, where do I see myself in the near future, five years or ten years down the road? I see myself making the first steps in the right direction with Future MT. They offer a program that is self-paced at home but has all the support (both during and after program completion) of a resident program. They guarantee their program and offer personalized support whenever it is needed. They set their students up for success, both now and in the future. After completing the program, I would eventually like to take the building blocks I learn from Future MT and work towards an Associates Degree in Medical Science (different schools name it different things, but I’m referring to the Associates Degree for medical transcription). After 2 years of experience, I would like to take the certification test so I can continue to grow and build my experience. I honestly can not tell you where I think this will lead in ten years because the possibilities are endless with medical transcription! After my children are grown, perhaps I will work in a hospital, clinic, doctor’s office, etc. If I work hard enough, maybe I can even start my own medical transcription business.
